“Built For Strong Women” An Editor Review Of Chromat AW18 NYFW

Date: 09 February 2018

Vibe: Amped-up.

We Loved: The architectural swim and athletic wear brand “built for strong women” sent out the most confident set of models so far this fashion week.

Favourite Model: Celebrating diversity across race, gender and body types, founder Becca McCharen-Tran worked with casting agent Gillian Smith to pick a strong line-up of positive women including plus-size supermodel Emme, who this season made her second appearance for the brand, performance artist Viktoria Modesta wearing a silver prosthesis leg and trans activist Geena Rocero.

Colour Palette: On its Instagram handle Chromat promised “Bright Futures” and that was delivered. Reds clashed with oranges and salmon pinks, electric blue swimwear was trimmed with transparent black meshing and scarlet lips were so iridescent they almost turned blue.

Hair: A naturally beautiful mix of wavy, loose and long, afro and top-not styles.

Print or Plain: The show was far from plain, but colors were kept strong and blocked.

The Silhouette: Figure hugging cut-out bathing suits and two-pieces were interrupted by the occasional relaxed dress, kaftan and pair of baggy chaps.

Accessorised: Eyewear designer Kerin Rose Gold, who herself sashayed the catwalk, created glossy lens-free shades (with exaggerated neck cords attached to them) for the show, fluro yellow tip tape held hair in place at the temple and footwear included wedged espadrilles and chunky boots.

Styling: Bright and loose.

Fun Fact: Models walked out with packets of Red Hot Cheetos and energy drinks strapped to their pants, some even ate the fiery snack then they turned at the end of the runway.

Overheard: “I fancy a bag Cheetos.”

Fun Fact Two: The brands 9k Instagram followers were teased by images of brightly-colored buoyancy aids (aka the pool noodle) ahead of the show.

Instagrammed: “The show was awesome!!! 💘💘💘.”

I spend most of my time browsing online shopping websites or over-indulging in high-calorie foods (and guilty of instagramming pics of them afterwards). I also have a serious obsession with searching for the dreamy holiday destinations (Manchester really isn’t that sunny) and I aspire to go travelling.
